Gastroenterology at Mount Zion

UCSF Gastroenterology at Mount Zion specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating conditions involving the digestive system, including diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.

Our state-of-the art care includes screening procedures, such as endoscopy and colonoscopy, as well as advanced imaging and therapeutic procedures, including intestinal ultrasound, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and therapeutic endoscopy. We have programs dedicated to patients with specific conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease (the main types of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD), gastrointestinal motility disorders, celiac disease and hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes.

Our team is also dedicated to research that will lead to a better understanding of various digestive disorders as well as new therapies. Many of our patients participate in clinical trials evaluating promising investigational treatments for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, eosinophilic esophagitis and other conditions.

Special program

The UCSF Celiac Disease Program cares for patients with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that disrupts digestion in the small intestine. Our experts also diagnose and manage other small intestine conditions, and collaborate with specialists in various disciplines on disorders and symptoms that may be related to celiac disease, such as thyroid disease; neuropathy; headaches; and certain liver, joint or skin problems. We work with providers in our Pediatric Celiac Disease Program to help patients of all ages and their families navigate testing and treatment.
