Neurogenetics Clinic
Offering genetic testing and counseling for adults, the UCSF Neurogenetics Clinic helps patients understand the links between their genes and neurological health issues. Numerous genetic conditions can affect the brain and other parts of the nervous system, and many of these disorders are difficult to diagnose. Some don't appear until later in life, produce unusual symptoms, or are rare.
These conditions may also affect neurodevelopment – altering how the brain develops and causing social, cognitive and emotional difficulties. Others may affect mental health, in which changes to the brain result in mental illness or behavioral issues.
Our team includes medical geneticists and genetic counselors. These experts evaluate patients for genetic conditions that may have given rise to their neurological problems. Both types of providers can support patients in making informed testing decisions. A medical geneticist can arrange testing and may offer treatment suggestions to patients and their family members. A genetic counselor can provide support and guidance through the diagnostic process and beyond.
The Neurogenetics Clinic is one of the few clinics nationwide dedicated to serving adults in the difficult situation of having neurological symptoms but no clear diagnosis. Our medical geneticists and genetic counselors work as a team with neurologists at the Neurology Complex Diagnosis Clinic to find answers that can lead to appropriate treatment. Patients seen in our clinic may have opportunities to participate in clinical trials (studies of promising treatments).
