What is a breast biopsy?

Doctors perform a breast biopsy when a physical exam or imaging test detects an abnormality in the breast that could indicate cancer. A breast biopsy is a surgical procedure that involves removing tissue from the suspicious area and examining that tissue for the presence of cancer cells.

Patients who have a breast biopsy don’t necessarily have cancer. In many cases, the tissue doesn’t contain any cancer cells, but you need a biopsy to confirm this.
