Dr. Edwin Alexander Alvarez is a gynecologic oncologist at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. He focuses on the surgical and medical treatment of ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and other cancers of the female reproductive system. He performs traditional, complicated and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries.

UCSF recruited Alvarez to serve as director of clinical trials for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. He is involved with NRG Oncology, a cooperative research group for cancer clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Before coming to UCSF, he directed chemotherapy services for gynecologic cancers at the University of California, Davis.

In addition to caring for patients, Alvarez has a strong commitment to teaching medical students, residents and fellows.

    Dr Alvarez was a breath of fresh air compared to my last oncologist. He took the time to explain everything I/we had questions on. He involved me in the decision making for my care. He gave me tons of options and clinical trials when my former Dr just gave me medicine and sent the on my way. Love Dr. Alvarez and his bedside manner!

    I always appreciate that Dr. Alvarez has reviewed the scans himself and will show me areas of concern. He is compassionate and accessible in his style of communication!

    I was not notified that Dr Alvarez had updated his notes about my surgery 2 days before this meeting. Had I known that I would have had better questions prepared and not been in such a state of shock during the meeting. (I felt blindsided by the information about perforations during surgery.) This is a complaint about the Notification system and not so much about Dr Alvarez.

    It is very unlikely to come up. I don't know anyone else that has uterine cancer. And most of my friends use Kaiser. But I would definitely recommend UCSF. I've gotten excellent treatment there with everyone I encountered. I think this question needs to be modified.

    Dr Alvarez is a highly educated well regarded physician. However despite this being my fourth appointment asked me what happened because I am in a wheelchair. He did not recall that I have been in a wheelchair from the first time we met.

    Dr. Alvarez is doing an excellent job with my cancer. I couldn't ask for a more conscientious doctor. I'm getting state of the art treatment with a care team that monitors my side effects closely. I'm grateful for Dr. Alvarez's care.

    The Dr.s office followed up with a positive answer to move forward & ok to get a blood test which would tell me if I qualify. Unfortunately that blood test has still not been scheduled.
