Dr. Hwa Soo Hoang is a psychiatrist whose approach to care includes taking time to explore his patient's life trajectory and cultural background when formulating treatment plans. His own wide-ranging personal experiences have given him a variety of perspectives that help him understand his patients' stories. Just as he imagines the person behind the work of art he's experiencing, he seeks to know the person behind the mental health concern when he is practicing medicine.

In research, Hoang studies the effects of modern mass surveillance on incarcerated people who are receiving psychiatric care through videoconferencing platforms.

Hoang earned his medical degree at Kyung Hee University in South Korea. He completed a residency in psychiatry at Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College, a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at BronxCare Health System, and a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at UCSF.

Hong served in the Korean Army, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2005.

I believe psychiatry works best when diagnosis incorporates a good understanding of the patient's personal narrative.
