Dr. Isaac Neuhaus is a dermatologic surgeon who specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery (a technique that maximizes preservation of normal tissue) and surgical reconstruction for skin cancer. He is an expert in laser surgery for treating a variety of vascular and pigmentary lesions, including extensive vascular malformations. He also performs cosmetic procedures, such as laser rejuvenation of photodamaged skin, Botox injections, soft tissue filler injections, chemical peels, sclerotherapy and liposuction.

In his research, Neuhaus studies skin cancer surgery and laser treatment.

Neuhaus earned a medical degree at the University of Florida. He completed a dermatology residency at UCSF, where he was chief resident, followed by a Mohs surgery and procedural dermatology fellowship, also at UCSF.

Neuhaus is a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, which awarded him its Cutting Edge Research Grant. He is past president of the California Society of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, and he is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgery and American Medical Association.

    My concerns were not properly evaluated and acted upon. In a manner that was appropriate with the clinical situation. I don't want to be asked "when do you want to come back". I want to hear "I hear your concerns and this should be the schedule and plan for what to do to try to optimize the clinical results"

    I appreciated the discussion between the doctors on how to repair my wound. It was good to hear them sharing and comparing strategies. I could have skipped all the discussion between everyone re: when everyone was going to go to lunch and who would have to stay behind to finish working on my care.

    Both Dr Neuhaus and his Fellow were terrific. The Fellow provided plenty of time with me to answer all of my questions. He even drew my situation on paper. This facilitated a smooth and quick visit with Dr Neuhaus, who was terrific as well. They are the best combination of skin cancer doctors I've experienced/met at UCSF (and I've met several).

    The attending nurse described to me a cream that the head of the department recommends to patients with a similar issue and so I asked my attending physician if he could give it to me for my infection and he did not want to prescribe or even make a effort to find out about it in a very abrupt manner. And, Recommended that I go to another department to see another doctor concerning my issue.

    The doctor that saw me was NOT helpful in answering whether he believed that continuing the MOHL's treatment of a Basal Cell might present a problem with scarring of my nose. Upon asking him whether he might might suggest a plastic surgeon if the cancer was deeper than he anticipated, he deflected all my suggestions that a perhaps a plastic surgeon would best handle the scarring to my nose. After much back and forth discussion, I couldn't help but come to the conclusion that his professional stature was being questioned, which wasn't the point. What I wanted to know succinctly, is at what point does a plastic surgeon handle the possible scarring resulting from the procedure as the doctor could not predict how deep he might have to go in order to get all the cancer. He simply explained that he could "handle it". And that answer is not sufficient.

    This was my second experience with Dr. Neuhaus and his team - both times for excision of melanoma. I feel very fortunate to have had such great care both times. From the injections of the pain killers to the smooth closing of my wound, I experienced a minimum of discomfort. And my post-operative experience has been very good, with no bleeding and a minimum of swelling.

    Didn't seem to care much, but answered my questions and took care of business--wrote my prescriptions and gave me referral for skin check appointment. No smile, no warmth. He was the best at giving lip filler on my last appointment so I believe he's technically skilled and knowledgeable but I guess he's not a people person.

    I wasn't informed that the lead doctor would not be doing the surgery. Instead a fellow did it. This amounts to very poor informed consent. It was bait and switch.

    I di nto know it but I wa sonly scheudled for a consultation, but I did wnat the lypoma removed and the doctor and nurses agreed if I waited, which I did and it allw ent very well. I felt respected and treated professionally.

    I didn't receive clear instructions on how to care for the wound aside from a letter. I didn't get enough stern-strips which are hard to find at a drug store. I had to call a few times for instructions.When I asked a follow up appt, I was told it was up to me. Having a lipoma removed from my forehead seems serious enough to warrant a follow up appt.

    My provider never did the procedure...he watched and talked and talked as his "fellow" did the excision and stitches. Several others entered the room during the procedure and I was never informed/introduced....seemed uncool to me

    My provider was working with a resident who provided a great deal of information about my procedure. She was informed and thoughtful in her delivery. I appreciate the information she provided and how she worked with me to help me feel comfortable. Dr. Neuhaus clearly had a lot of knowledge and expertise in dermatological surgery which he is passing on to his resident however he did not offer the same sort of bedside manner his resident did. Perhaps there is something from him to learn from her too.

    There were many care providers with different jobs throughout my procedure, they were short handed because a Dr had to leave due to a family emergency. The team asked me if it was OK that they were running 1/2 hour behind schedule. The hour and a half was after I had the injection and area affected removed. I enjoyed a 11/2 hour read time as It was such cozy a quiet space, excellent lighting , comfortable seating+ I brought an interest article. I was very happy.
