Pronouns: She | Her | Hers

Dr. Katerina L. Byanova is a specialist in pulmonology (respiratory system diseases) and critical care medicine. She has a special focus on bronchiectasis, a condition where damaged airways allow mucus to accumulate in the lungs, as well as on HIV-related lung diseases. In addition to working in the clinic, she sees patients in the intensive care unit.

In research, Byanova investigates chronic lung diseases in people living with HIV, who often develop these conditions earlier in life than the general population. She works with patient groups in San Francisco and Kampala, Uganda, to understand the specific drivers of disease in each population and identify treatments that could decrease the individual and societal impacts of lung disease and improve quality of life for patients.

Byanova earned a master's degree in biomedical sciences at UTHealth Houston, part of the University of Texas System, before earning her medical degree at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, she completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in global health. She completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF.
