About me

Dr. Puneet Sood is a nephrologist who cares for patients during all phases of kidney transplantation. He evaluates patients for transplant surgery and cares for them before, during and after the procedure. He has special expertise in diagnosing and treating kidney allograft rejection, when a patient's immune system attacks the new organ. As medical director of UCSF's kidney transplant unit, he also oversees all medical care, research and fellowship training related to kidney transplantation.

Sood's research focuses on finding less invasive ways to monitor patients for allograft rejection following kidney transplant surgery. Specifically, he is searching for a marker in blood or urine that can replace the standard biopsy test for organ rejection. He also studies how the bodies of kidney transplant recipients handle medications that suppress the immune system.

Sood earned his medical degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by a fellowship in general nephrology at the University of Florida and a fellowship in transplant nephrology at UCSF. He also has a master of public health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
