Ramotse Saunders

Dr. Ramotse Saunders specializes in consultation-liaison psychiatry, an approach to care focused on the overlap between medical and psychiatric disorders. He also has expertise in therapeutic brain stimulation techniques (which modify the brain's electrical activity), such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroconvulsive therapy. He is executive medical director of psychiatric acute care services at UCSF and previously served as director of inpatient services at UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital.

Saunders is the UCSF Gloria Hubner Endowed Chair in Psycho-Oncology. In research, his work has focused on brain electrophysiology in alcoholism, TMS, as well as ethics and neurophilosophy (which combines neuroscience and philosophy in the investigation of such topics as consciousness). He is a member of the Precision Mood Research Clinic. Before joining UCSF, he was a faculty member at the SUNY (State University of New York) Downstate Health Sciences University for 10 years, serving as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist as well as a member of both the clinical ethics committee and institutional review board.

Saunders earned his medical degree at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. He completed a residency in psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he served as chief resident.
