Dr. Steven Nguyen, who goes by Sen, is a family doctor who provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages. They aim to forge partnerships with their patients, creating a space where individuals and families feel heard. They have particular interests in trauma-informed care (an approach that takes into account past traumatic experiences), gender-affirming care (treatments that help transgender and nonbinary individuals align their lives with their gender identity), health equity and reproductive health.

Nguyen earned their medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. They completed a residency in family medicine at the University of New Mexico and served as chief resident in their final year. Before coming to UCSF, they worked at a community health center that provides medical care for all patients regardless of ability to pay.

Nguyen is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

    I will recommend Dr. Nguyen to any GNC friend who is looking for competent care from a Primary Care Physician. She was perfectly knowledgeable, had excellent patient-facing demeanor, and made me feel heard & understood in a tangible way by how she addressed the questions I asked her about. She also direct & honest to me about any conditions or symptoms I reported that she would need to learn about further to understand better, and what aspects of my care fall outside of her scope of practice. For those aspects, she made me feel confident that she and I could work together to help me find specialists who may be able to assist us further. I feel lucky to have been assigned to her as a patient, and I think she will continue to make a great positive impact in any community she practices within.

    Dr. Nguyen answered all my questions thoroughly and allowed me a chance to be part of the decision making of my treatment plan. Dr. Nguyen performed a procedure which is normally very uncomfortable for me. He was very patient and very gentle. And we were able to complete it.

    Genuinely have never felt this listened to by any doctors of any kind. Cathy and Dr. Steven made me feel so validated and heard when sharing my experiences. They made sure I got to say everything I needed to and kept asking just to make sure. And I was asked clarifying questions as well. It felt very intentional and I was so so grateful for the two of them.

    As a nonbinary person I have had some not so great experiences approaching trans healthcare. It was great to have a provider that started with my goals rather than just trying to place me on the traditional binary transition path.

    Dr. Ngyuen was very prompt in having this call and asked detailed questions and discussed options and was very good. His prescribing medications has helped me tremendously and the conditions are now much better.

    Less so the fault of the provider, but UCSF's reliance on outdated standards from the Endocrine Society is ridiculous and I will most likely being choosing to continue my care elsewhere.

    Dr Nuygen was the best physician I have seen hands down. I have waited 20 years to find a physician that was escorted in trans health issues, who would listen and explain, who let me feel heard and then work with me in partnership for my health care and program.     I came in for trigger injection treatment for my fibromyalgia pain in the front part of my shoulder joint area. The doctor mainly focused on my shoulder muscle connected to my neck. I had mentioned twice that my pain was on the front area of my shoulder. I pointed to him twice. Needless to say he did not treat that area. And I have experienced extreme pain the entire weekend And I am very unhappy. I was excited to receive the trigger point injection therapy for this pain that has been bothering me for months without resolution! The doctor was extremely nice and yes, my right shoulder muscle connected to my neck is OK but that was not my primary concern . Now I have to suffer sleepless nights due to the pain and hope I am able to receive treatment where it hurts. Again, the doctor was extremely nice but my primary pain was not addressed

    Dr. Nguyen was very polite and understanding and they asked useful questions to help me give them all the information they needed for my care. They clearly listened to my concerns and made me feel that my questions and concerns were worth discussing. They were an excellent doctor and I would highly recommend them to most trans people in San Francisco.
