Asian Liver Health Center
The UCSF Asian Liver Health Center was designed to improve access to comprehensive liver care and increase health education in the local Asian community. Recognizing the diversity within the Asian community, we aim to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate information and education on liver disease that meets the needs of various groups.
Partnering with the UCSF Liver Disease and Liver Transplant Clinic, the Asian Liver Health Center's mission is threefold:
- Increase access to specialty liver care.
- Through community engagement, improve awareness and understanding of liver health and the liver diseases that disproportionately impact Asian Americans, such as hepatitis B and liver cancer.
- Increase access to clinical trials (studies that use volunteers to evaluate promising new treatments) and boost Asian American representation in research studies related to liver disease.
We have providers who speak Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese. Interpreter services for other Asian languages are also available.

National trial on liver cancer screening
This study, which includes patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B, aims to find a better way to detect liver cancer. Recruiting participants of Asian descent, who are disproportionately affected by liver cancer, is particularly important. The trial compares ultrasound- and biomarker-based screening in 5,500 patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B, evaluated after 5 and a half years for reduction in the incidence of late-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer. Ask your doctor whether you may qualify for the study.
